Dave Cohen
David Cohen began taking drum lessons at age 10. Inspired by such diverse drumming legends as Ringo Starr, Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, Art Blakey, 'Philly' Joe Jones, Charlie Watts, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, and Steve Gadd, he went on to study with percussionist William Cahn at the Eastman School of Music and famed jazz drummers Vinnie Ruggiero in Rochester, NY and Ed Soph at the University of North Texas.
During the 80s, David co-led a rock band called 'Backseat Sally', which released an album on Atlantic Records and an MTV video. Other studio credits include albums by Prime Time Funk, The Dinner Dogs, Glenn Medeiros, Anthony Watson, and The Rockin' Rebels, as well as soundtracks for HBO, CBS, Wegmans, Ruby Gordon, First Niagara and TVKO. Dave has also performed with Gap Mangione, The Mambo Kings, Bat McGrath, Barry Kiener, 'Sax' Gordon Beadle, Rodney Dangerfield, Lou Gramm, Russell Malone, Mark Manetta, Bobby DiBaudo, Tino Gonzales, Nancy Kelly, Donny Gerrard, Francine Reed and Sherman Robertson (at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in Paris, France), Billy Bang (at the 2006 Rochester International Jazz Festival), as well as the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
David is a founding member of Prime Time Funk. PTF is a 10 piece band with 5 horns that also serves as the house band for the Rochester Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies held annually at Kodak Hall in the Eastman Theatre. David has backed a diverse range of artists at the RMHOF including: Gene Cornish & Felix Cavilaire (The Rascals), Cee Cee Calloway (Cab Calloway), Bat McGrath, John Mooney, Joe Beard, Bob McGrath (Sesame Street, Sing Along With Mitch), Russell Thompkins (The Stylistics), Reggie Torian (The Impressions), Kathy Sledge (Sister Sledge), and Marsha Ambrosius (Floetry). Prime Time Funk has released 2 CDs: "Ready and Willing' (2001) and 'Hear and Now' (2012). PTF closed out the 2014 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival with a performance at the East Avenue & Alexander Street stage opening for Soulive.
Dave is also a busy private drum instructor at his 'Drum Corner' home studio in Fairport, NY,and an active drum tech whose clients include the world class Studios at Linden Oaks in Rochester, NY. Dave's drum tech credits include Steve Gadd ("Drum Duets" w/John Wackerman, "Free" by Joe Brucato, "October Road by James Taylor), Ralph Humphrey(HBO), Ben Parris (Linden Oaks), and producers Godfrey Diamond, Jeff Tyzik, & Eddie Kramer.
